There’s an elephant in the room when it comes to talking about sustainability and running a creative business in 2026: AI.
We use AI as part of the creative process at Pattern & Chaos. Sometimes it helps us develop an idea, experiment with a concept or create elements that eventually become part of a design. It doesn’t replace the ideas, decisions, editing and frankly ridiculous amount of tinkering that goes into what we make — but it is one of the tools we use, and we don’t want to pretend otherwise.
We’re also very aware that AI has an environmental footprint. Data centres use energy and water, and that matters — particularly for a brand that is trying to make more conscious choices.
The truth is, there probably isn’t such a thing as a perfectly sustainable business. Every website, payment, delivery, piece of packaging, printed garment and digital tool has an impact somewhere. So our approach isn’t to claim that Pattern & Chaos is perfect. It’s to be honest about what we use, make better choices where we can, and keep trying to do better.
That means choosing quality garments with strong environmental and ethical credentials, encouraging people to rescue and re-wear clothes through Re-Chaos, producing thoughtfully rather than creating mountains of disposable fashion, and being transparent about the tools involved in making our designs.
And because acknowledging an impact feels better when it comes with an actual action: 🌳 50p from every Pattern & Chaos order is donated to the Woodland Trust.
It doesn’t magically cancel out the environmental impact of AI — and we’re not going to pretend that it does. It’s simply one small way of putting something back while we continue looking for ways to make Pattern & Chaos better.
No greenwashing. No pretending we’re perfect. Just creativity, transparency, and better choices wherever we can make them.
